EPMU Delegate Education Workshops

The EPMU offers an extensive range of education opportunities for delegates and other workplace union leaders. At the heart of our national education programme is a set of courses that aim to develop the core skills and competencies to be an effective union representative in the workplace. The aims and learning outcomes for these courses are set out below:

Foundation Programme - 1 Day

AIM: To develop delegates' understanding about their role

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
o explore and better understand the role of a delegate
o broadly understand the object of the Employment Relations Act
o apply a range of problem solving techniques to workplace issues

Getting Up-skilled for the Job - 2 Days (can be modularised)

AIM: To develop the essential skills for working effectively as a delegate

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

o use a range of note taking methods
o understand the importance of good interviewing, listening and assertiveness practices
o understand how the role of our union relates to our history and how we organise
o understand the broad legal framework of the Employment Relations Act 2000
o use a range of problem solving techniques to resolve workplace issues

Getting Organised - 2 Days (can be modularised)

AIM: To develop the essential skills for union organising

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

o better understand what we mean by ‘organising' and how we ‘organise'
o identify different organising structures and planning techniques
o understand the relationship between recruiting and campaigning
o identify different recruiting techniques

Getting Organised for Bargaining - 2 Days (can be modularised)

AIM: To learn the skills for effective bargaining

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course delegates will be able to

o identify and understand the key elements of bargaining
o better understand the bargaining sections of the Employment Relations Act
o analyse their current collective agreement against union and industry standards
o develop the skills required for more effective bargaining outcomes
