The EPMU's Food Industry is the section of the EPMU that represents 3000 New Zealand workers in areas including dairy, fruit and vegetable processing, sheep and beef processing, baking and brewing. Food manufacturing provides over a quarter of the total amount of full time employment in manufacturing.
The largest employers in this sector are Fonterra, Tegel Foods, Heinz Watties, PPCS Ltd, Yarrows the Bakers, Dominion Breweries and the Alliance Group and the EPMU is currently expanding into other large food processing sites.
Members on the Food Industry Council have decided the focus this year will be on growing and strengthening the union in the food industry. This industry is a relatively new one for the EPMU and is developing quickly.
The food industry is one of the most important industries in New Zealand and its workers have a lot to gain from getting organised and negotiating collectively for a better deal.
The EPMU is a key player in this effort and is actively engaged with other unions in the sector to increase food workers' strength across the country.
Food workers in the EPMU are affiliated internationally with the International Union of Food Workers (IUF).
We also work closely in this industry with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.
