EPMU will fight to protect NZ Post jobs

The EPMU will fight to keep as many jobs at NZ Post as possible after the company announced it is considering redundancies as part of a restructuring driven by a fall in mail volumes.

Post's consultation with the union is now underway and EPMU national postal organiser Anna Kenny says the union will be casting a critical eye over the company's proposals.

"Our first job as a union is to try and protect as many of our members' jobs as possible. We'll be casting a very critical eye over the company's figures and looking at where we can use optimal use of rostering hours of work and redeployment across the NZ Post Group as an alternative to redundancy.

"Ideally there will be no job losses, but if at the end of the process there have to be redundancies we're determined to make sure our members get not just their union redundancy entitlement but financial assistance for retraining and job placement.

"It's a tough job market out there, and at a time like this it's more important than ever that workers stick together and speak to the company with one united voice."

The EPMU represents 45,000 working New Zealanders including 5000 members at New Zealand Post and its subsidiaries.
