EPMU launches magazine for journalist members

12 February, 2010

The EPMU will launch the first Australasian edition of The Walkley magazine in New Zealand this month with events in Auckland and Wellington.

The Walkley is a well respected independent journal for media professionals that has been published in Australia for decades and will now contain New Zealand content written by New Zealand journalists and be delivered to all EPMU journalist members five times a year.

Brent Edwards, chair of the EPMU's print and media industry council, says he hopes the magazine will not only inform journalists here but also provoke a wider debate about the role of journalism and how we practice it in New Zealand and Australia.

The aim is for the magazine to include at least two articles from a New Zealand perspective. In the February edition Brent Edwards writes about the Journalism Matters campaign and Gael Woods reports on the debate on how name suppression and contempt of court should apply to bloggers.

EPMU journalist members and others in the media industry are invited to attend the launches in Auckland and Wellington.

The Wellington launch will be on Monday February 22nd at the Connolly Hall, Guildford Tce (behind Sacred Heart Church, Hill street) from 6-8pm. The Auckland launch is taking place the next day, Tuesday February 23rd from 6-8pm upstairs at the Shakespeare.

Chris Warren, secretary of the Australian Media Alliance and immediate past president of the International Federation of Journalists, will deliver the keynote speech for the launches and refreshments will be provided.
