User Poll:

First Learning Reps graduate

31 August, 2007

The first union members to come through the Learning Reps programme had their graduation at the CTU this week.

The programme, which is designed to help people in their workplaces become advocates for learning, is government-funded and modelled on a highly successful British initiative.

EPMU national education officer Ross Teppett says the Learning Reps programme will play a vital role in skills development. “The programme is run according to a set of national standards and in passing them these graduates have shown they are now armed the skills and information they need to promote learning in their workplaces.”

“The key role of the learning rep is to work with their workmates and employers to get workplace training and education in place,” says Teppett, “and that can be as simple as getting decent literacy and numeracy education for people. There’s a lot of talk about how New Zealand should be focused on developing a highly-skilled and educated workforce, and learning reps are a big part of that.”
