Wickliffe redundancies announced

The redundancies at Wickliffe press in Dunedin were finally confirmed yesterday as part of the company’s relocation of operations to Auckland.

Twenty-six workers aware made redundant immediately and there are scheduled to be another six redundancies later in December.

EPMU organiser Mike Kirwood says the mood at the site was sombre. “Everyone is sad, they’re all longstanding staff and union members including one guy who’s worked here for forty-five years.”

“This has been on the cards for ages,” says Kirwood, “but it doesn’t make it any easier for the members.”

The affected workers will not have to work out their month’s notice.
